Breakfast in Charleston
Where can I eat breakfast in Charleston? Up until a few years ago no one seemed to even worry about breakfast in town. Then, boom, we went crazy on breakfast. Now we have plenty of great spots. As we get started its important to point out that a line doesn’t always mean a good meal. Sometimes it makes no sense why someone is lining up for breakfast at particular spot. Here are some of our favorite spots!
Miller’s All Day
120 King St. and James Island
Partially owned by Greg Johnsman of Marsh Hen Mill; this retro diner has the best grits in the city. Breakfast here is the usual fare but done to an extraordinary level. Nothing weird is done to any menu item. Bacon is brought in from Broadbent farms in KY and is incredible. 8am-3pm, No reservations, first come first served.
Big Bad Breakfast
456 Meeting St
The brainchild of Oxford, MS chef John Currence to get people to respect breakfast food again. Amazing pancakes, terrific bowls, and huge chicken biscuits. 7am-2:30pm, no reservations, first come first served.
DAPS Breakfast and Imbibe
280 Ashley Ave
Creative, out of the way breakfast place with wonderful neighborhood vibe and super creative sandwiches. Chorizo and gravy sandwich is awesome. Hard to take a wrong step at this super local place. 8am-2pm no reservations, sit down counter service.
Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit
476 ½ King St or 188 Meeting St in the City Market
Famous biscuit stand run by Carrie Morey (PBS’ How She Rolls host) who learned the biscuit trade with her mom who is the namesake, Callie. Hot little biscuits are 3 for $6 with an assortment of flavors best of which are blackberry jam and country ham. You can also create a biscuit with custom topping. Lines t Callie’s are ALWAYS insane, so order online and pick up at either location. King St is usually much busier than Market location. Counter service for take away only.
Vicious Biscuit
409 W. Coleman Blvd over the bridge in Mt Pleasant
This place is crazy! Biscuits the size of your plate covered in every topping you can imagine. The flamethrower is awesome, Nashville Hot Chicken on a biscuit with cheddar cheese and gravy. Not healthy at all, but worth it! No reservations, first come first served.
Marina Variety Store
9 Lockwood Dr
Greasy spoon with an amazing view and the best Chicken and Waffles in Charleston. The restaurant overlooks the City Marina, so everything looks out over the water. No reservations, first come first served.
Handy and Hot
68 Wentworth St
The breakfast spot of Vivian Howard (PBS’ A Chef’s Life) that serves all kinds of take away items like grit bowls, yogurt bowls and most importantly, hand pies. Handheld pies that come in several flavors like Apple Pie, Cheeseburger, Pear, and usually a guest chef will do the filling for another that rotates every 3 months. They are terrific! 7am-330pm Limited indoor seating, mostly counter service take away.
Early Bird Diner
1644 Savannah Hwy West Ashley
Featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Great little spot out of downtown for a good breakfast and quirky setting. Very good food and usually quite busy. No reservations, first come first served.
Baguette Magic
73 Spring St
Spectacular French breakfast sandwiches and a cult favorite with locals. A terrific spot with a wonderful staff. Open daily until 2pm.
The Grit Counter
Montague Ave North Charleston
Imagine having the ability to put whatever you want into a bowl of grits and you have the Grit Bowl. It’s a wonderful little spot if you are staying up in the north area of the city, especially the airport hotels.
